Goodbye, Steven Wells (1960-2009)

Death has seemed to permeate the news over the last few weeks.  We’ve certainly lost our fair share of prominent figures.  Among the overwhelming media coverage of the passing of aged sex symbols, pop superstars, and TV pitchmen, another death passed under the radar of most of us.

Philadelphia was lucky enough to have a rather interesting character in our midst over the last several years… a curious Brit by the name of Steven Wells.  Last Wednesday, intestinal cancer took Steven away from us.

I must admit that I was completely unaware of the totality of his career.  I never knew that before coming to the United States, he was one of the UK’s most notorious music critics who earned the disdain, fear, and respect of many of Britain’s most famous recording artists.

I only knew Steven Wells as the guy who wrote the humorous little op-ed pieces for Philadelphia Weekly.  I knew him as the guy who fearlessly and hilariously skewered politics, culture, hipsters, the media, and religion.  I knew him as the guy who was always going to bring laughter to my Wednesday morning bus ride as I read his latest articles.

If I had to sum up if style, I suppose I would say he was the George Carlin of the Philly media.  He was a world class bullshit detector.  Not only did he detect said bullshit, but he dragged it into the light, mocked it, set it on fire, and pissed on the flames.  Nothing was taboo to Steven.  He was a sarcastic, acerbic, opinionated son of a bitch… and you loved him for it.

He was also a humanitarian and all around great guy.  He always took the time to respond to the emails I sent him about his articles.  I also had the pleasure of meeting him when he came to our Philly Atheist Meetup to do a PW cover story about us (for the Christmas issue, nonetheless).  For all of his seething commentaries and venomous rants, he was actually just a smart, friendly, and unassuming fellow.

Many of those who knew him wrote tributes to him in this week’s issue of PW, but I have to say that my favorite was written by Jonathan Valania:

Most Public battles with cancer are cast as heroic.  Wells would have none of that bullocks,  He was scared shitless, and he said as much because it’s the only reasonable human response.  He was mad as hell at the unfairness of it all, because, again, it is the only reasonable response.  And by the end he was sick of it all – the pain, the indignity, and the boredom of dying.  What made Steven heroic was his willingness to say as much for publication, in lieu of some phony brave face.  If nothing else, he innovated the lost art of dying honestly.  If there is anything to be learned from Wells’ cruelly premature passing it’s this: Life is not fair, and it’s later than you think.  So enjoy yourself and plan accordingly.

Some might view this as a depressing and nihilistic view of life and death.  I see it as quite the opposite.  Reality isn’t always pretty.  Life isn’t always fair.  These are truths that we have to accept.  We have to accept it and get the fuck over it.  Stop lying to yourself and pretending that there’s some deeper meaning hidden behind the scenes.  Stop pretending that everything happens for a reason.  Stop viewing life as an audition for some delusional view of eternity.

If you want your life to have meaning, then get off your ass and give your life some meaning.  Make someone smile.  Make someone laugh.  Reach out and help someone who is in need.  And most importantly, don’t ever forget to let the people you are fortunate enough to have in your life know how happy you are to share your all-too-brief existence with them.

We have what is here.  We have what is now.  Get the hell out there and make the here and now count, and try to leave this crazy and beautiful world a little bit nicer than it was when you got here.

Steven Wells was one of those clever little primates who did just that.  Like all of us, he could only carry the torch so far.  The best way for us to honor him is to pick it up and carry it for however long we can, and hope that someone else is there to grab it when we’ve reached the end of our brief journey.

Steven, thanks for making us laugh.  Thanks for making us think.  Thanks for the time you spent in our mad, mad world…

Although it wasn’t long enough.

Gay marriage showdown in PA?

There are a few constants in my morning routine… the bus ride to work, my 24 oz. black coffee, chocolate chip muffin, and the daily edition of “Metro” (a newspaper which fits comfortably in my price range).  Although the paper is generally 20 some odd pages of ads and celebrity gossip, they usually manage to squeeze in a few good articles.

This morning, the dedicated a section of the front page to discuss the looming same-sex marriage battle coming to Pennsylvania.

Living in Philadelphia, I am confronted with a sort of political paradox.  Philly is one of the most progressive cities in the country, and is generally regarded to be what is called a “gay-friendly” city.  Most of the businesses gladly cater to gay clientele (apparently realizing that gay money is also green), and the overwhelming majority of us straight folks support gay rights.

However, large portions of central Pennsylvania are very much part of what can be considered the “Bible Belt”, a rural fundamentalist Christian stronghold.

Because of this contrast, the laws of our commonwealth do not always reflect the attitudes of our fair city.  This had caused a great deal of frustration for Philly’s sizable gay community.  While they have never actually passed, there have been attempts by our state legislature to define what many consider to be “traditional” marriage.

The latest attempt is a proposal by Senator John Eichelberger (R-Hollidaysburg) to amend our state constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one women.  Metro printed the following quote:

“The government recognized many years ago this is the best model for society.  People live longer, they raise children better so they should use that model. …It’s a proven model that our forefathers recognized”

I think it should be pointed out that what he is describing are the benefits of marriage, although not necessarily straight marriage.  As far as the comments about our forefathers, I would be quite curious to find out exactly what George Washington or Thomas Jefferson said about the subject of marriage equality.  I don’t think the issue ever came up, as they were far too busy contemplating that fact that their slaves counted as three fifiths of a human being.  But I digress.

In contrast to this proposal, another has been made by Senator Daylin Leach (D-King of Prussia) to recognize all marriages as valid and grant same sex married couples the same rights and responsibilities as their straight counterparts.  I very much enjoyed his quote on the subject:

“It’s inevitable.  We’ll think of it as we think of interracial marriage. … I want to … at least have Pennsylvania in the middle of the pack instead of hanging out toward the back with Alabama and Mississippi.”

I certainly hope none of my freethinking friends from the south are offended by this remark (I doubt they are, as they are usually the first to mock the fundamentalism within their own states).  I think Sen. Leach has made a very important point with this statement.

Despite what our fundamentalist friends would have us believe, gay rights are moving forward and will continue to do so.  Ultimately, any society which professes to uphold the principles of equality must abolish any vestiges of the old “separate but equal” philosophies of the past.  Our generation will eventually be judged by those who follow many years down the road.  Will we be seen as people who stood for fairness and equality, or will we be seen as a paradoxical generation who regarded individuals as three fifths of a human being?

Personally, I see a great deal of hope.  Homophobia seems far less common among young Americans today.  In addition, the ranks of atheists, agnostics, humanists, and progressive believers are growing every day.  People are becoming far less inclined to allow antiquated dogmas to define their opinions on sexaul morality, adopting a “to each his own” or “live and let live” philosophy.

This is, of course, just a personal observation.  However, I do strongly feel that we are seeing old fashioned religious fundamentalism in its death throws.  We might not live to see the end of it, but I’m certain our children and grandchildren will.

And what will happen when they do?  Will they thank us for the work we’ve done to move human rights forward, or will they see us as a group of apathetic individuals who said nothing while our brothers and sisters drowned in a sea of ancient dogma and intolerance?

As I said, to each his own.  It is entirely up to you to determine how you will be remembered.  Personally, I hope to be remembered as someone who stood up for the rights of all and rejected the mythologies of the past… and I hope that you will be remembered right there beside me.

AFA brings out one “Heck” of a straw man

It’s always loads of fun to see the American Family Association take on the world of science.  It’s one of their three natural enemies (the other two being some hideous phantasm known as “the gay agenda” and basic common sense).

Today, they treated us to an astute criticism of evolutionary immunology by a gentleman named Peter Heck.  I naturally assumed that he was one of Ken Ham’s lackeys from Answers in Genesis… but it turns out that Mr. Heck is the host of a two hour right wing Christian radio talk show in Kokoma, Indiana.

His article, entitled “Darwinists’ swine flu science”, attempts to critique an article in Live Science magazine which explains how evolutionary science is critical in understanding the evolution of a virus (as if one would use any other sort of science to understand the evolution of an organism).

I began to read the article and was treated to one of the most epic opening paragraphs ever written.  Mind you, it wasn’t epic because it was powerfully written.  It wasn’t epic because it made a valid point.  It was epic because I believe it set a new world record…

The number of straw men one can cram into a few short sentences.

I present this paragraph to you, in all of its strawy goodness (please… no open flames within the vicinity of this paragraph).

It never ceases to amaze me how intellectually condescending evolutionary naturalists can be.  Keep in mind, these are folks who believe that an indescribably tiny wad of nothingness exploded into a fully functional, structured, and ordered universe of orbiting planets and complex creatures without any supernatural agency involved.  They are the ones who cling to a theory known as spontaneous generation – the notion that dead matter can just suddenly pop to life.  They are the ones who champion a man (Charles Darwin) who suggested that Africans were more closely related to gorillas than Caucasians.  They are the ones who believe that a wolf-like animal with hooves took to the water, lost its legs, and morphed into a whale (Cetaceans).  If anyone should go easy on the intellectual condescension, it’s these people.  But they don’t.

First of all… he makes the statement that we believe that “an indescribably tiny wad of nothingness exploded into a fully functional, structured, and ordered universe of orbiting planets and complex creatures without any supernatural agency involved.”  This is one of the most intellectually dishonest statements I have ever read.  Notice that he begins with an incredibly glib description of the Big Bang theory, then quickly goes on to imply that we claim that every other natural process, from the formation of stars to the evolution of complex organisms, just happened randomly from there.  I know of no scientists who would make anything even resembling this claim.  This is a clear example of the dishonest tactics used by creationists to defcredit science.

He goes on to claim that we cling to the theory of spontaneous generation.  Really?  We do?  That’s odd… I thought that spontaneous generation was an ancient and archaic theory that was finally abandoned after Pasteur’s experiments in the mid 19th century.  I assume that he is attempting to cause his readers to confuse spontaneous generation with abiogenesis, the modern field of study which attempts to understand the formation of complex proteins and how they combined to form DNA, leading to our world’s most primitive life forms some 2-3 billion years ago.  You don’t need to be a biologist to understand that abiogenesis has absolutely nothing to do with spontaneous generation.  You need only read up on the subject and apply a bit of common sense.

Heck then goes on to employ one of the favorite tactics of the creationists… slander Charles Darwin.  I’m going to play devil’s advocate on this.  For one moment, let’s assume Darwin was a racist.  Let’s assume he was the biggest, most bigoted racist who ever lived.  What, exactly, would this have to do with his work as a scientist?  Would this automatically invalidate his theory of natural selection?  No, it wouldn’t.  I suppose this tactic is not quite a straw man.  It’s more of a red herring… the squirmy little friend of the straw man.

Of course, I was by no means conceding that Darwin was a racist.  In reality, he saw little distinction between the so-called races of humans, arguing that there was often more diversity within a race than between races.  An excellent critique of the “Darwin was a racist” idea can be found at http://rationalrevolution.net/articles/darwin_nazism.htm

So… are we “intellectually condescending”?  At times, yes.  I will not even attempt to argue this point.  However, I would like to point out that we don’t start out that way.  We become condescending when faced with absurdity masquerading as science.  We become condescending when people base their knowledge of the universe on the mythological ramblings of Bronze Age scribes.

And we certainly become condescending when conservative Christian talk show hosts spew forth a heady mixture of straw men, red herrings, and pseudo-science.

Thank you, Peter Heck.  Thank you for making our job so damn easy.  Thank you for providing such a brilliant example of everything that is wrong with contaminating science with religious thought.

Although it doesn’t spontaneously generate form the back end of a bull, it certainly does from the mouths of the religious right.

The Crusade for a Christian Military

“The Crusade for a Christian Military”: Are US Forces Trying to Convert Afghans to Christianity?

The military is denying it allows its soldiers to proselytize to Afghans, following the release of footage showing US soldiers in Afghanistan discussing how to distribute Bibles translated into Pashto and Dari. We speak to Air Force veteran and former Reagan administration counsel Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and journalist Jeff Sharlet, author of a Harper’s Magazine article on “The Crusade for a Christian Military.”

————————————–

“Democracy NOW!” did an amazing story concerning the radicalization of the United States military by Evangelical Christians.  This is a MUST SEE story for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.

This is some truly frightening stuff.  Allowing an organization as powerful as the US military to fall under control of religious extremists presents a danger to our entire world.

Please check out the story, and pass it along to friends.

Ethical Humanist Society of Philly presents Suraya Pakzad

The Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia presents…

Thursday, March 12, 2009–Suraya Pakzad: An evening with an Afghan woman of courage, Founder and Director of Voice of Women Organization

7:30 PM

Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia

1906 S. Rittenhouse Square

The daily struggles of women in Afghanistan are marked by hopelessness and despair. Women are imprisoned for things they don’t understand, beaten (or worse) by their husbands for simply looking at another man in the eye, or burned at their own hands in an attempt to escape their fate. But one Afghan woman has relentlessly put her life in danger to expose their plight and improve their lives.

That woman is Suraya Pakzad, founder and director of Voice of Women Organization, a non-governmental organization dedicated to helping women achieve economic, social and political rights in the western region of Afghanistan. VWO was founded in secrecy during the Taliban rule; meetings were in held in Ms. Pakzad’s home and initially devoted to teaching girls and young women to read. Over time, VWO expanded to provide shelter to abused women, micro-financing and other poverty-reduction programs, as well as promoting the role of women in government. Ms. Pakzad is the 2008 recipient of the Secretary of State’s award for International Women of Courage, honored for her exceptional courage and leadership in promoting women’s rights and advancement.
Ms. Pakzad will be describing her shared experience with the women of Afghanistan, the daily horrors and
struggle for basic rights, and how her efforts are challenging the present situation. We will also learn how we can help.

Help the fundies say “no” to special rights

For those of us used to dealing with the religious fundamentalists, hypocrisy is nothing new.  In fact, it seems to be their bread and butter (or should I say, the body of their savior and margarine?)

However, I occasionally stumble upon something so utterly hypocritical that it seems to don a top hat, tails, and cane and perform an epic song and dance routine celebrating its hypocrisy.  When I encounter such a thing, I am always flabbergasted that the individuals making such statements seem to be completely unaware of it.

The subject of today’s flabbergastery is a One News Now article entitled “Christian school showing film about homosexual agenda”.

The article discusses a documentary (which is apparently the term the AFA uses as a euphemism for “propaganda film”) about the ever present, evil, and shadowy force known as “the homosexual agenda” (insert dramatically scary music here).  It quotes a woman by the name of Mary Balkema, a spokesperson for a group called Kalamazoo Citizens Voting No to Special Rights Discrimination, which was “successful in getting city commissioners to rescind an anti-discrimination ordinance for homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals”.  Let’s take a moment to review what she said on the subject…

“We’re talking about behaviors, and behaviors people are accountable for. We think that being a cross-dresser or transgendered is a behavior,” she contends. “We’re talking about the effects that a behavior has on society. So certainly we’re trying to act in a very fair fashion in bringing that forward.”

This viewpoint is, of course, nothing new.  The very basis of the religious right’s argument against the rights of the LGBT community has always been the “nature versus nurture” issue.  Essentially, their point is that homosexuality is a choice, and therefor should not be protected under the same laws that ensure equal rights for other minority groups.

Nature versus nurture is an incredibly complicated debate which is still being researched by many experts, so I will make no attempt to resolve it here.  However, I would like to point out that homosexuality occurs commonly throughout nature and is by no means confined to humanity alone.  Most people agree that this indicates at least some degree of natural inclination toward homosexuality.

Since the fundamentalists seem to be quite fond of using the nature versus nurture argument to explain why homosexuals should not have rights, I believe we should hold them up to the same standard.

Our constitution ensures that all American citizens have the right to practice their religions.  In fact, groups like the AFA often argue that anti discrimination laws which protects homosexuals violate their right to religious freedom.  There is some degree of merit to this argument, as any laws which involve the right to free speech can get quite tricky.  I do not intend to debate this issue in this post.

What I would like to do is pose one simple question… Are an individual’s religious beliefs a result of nature or nurture?

This question is far more simple to answer.  No child is inherently Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or any other religion.  The religious beliefs held by an individual are clearly the result of upbringing and personal choice.

To the best of my knowledge, no child has ever been born with a cross, rosary, or star of David in their hand.  If they were, I think it would be less an indication of inherent faith and more of an indication that the child’s mother had some sort of a bizarre fetish involving religious symbols (which brings up a whole new set of psychological issues that I have neither the time, expertise, nor desire to discuss at this time).

I know many people will claim that their personal religious views are intrinsic, but this simply isn’t true.  If a child was isolated from society at birth, it is seriously doubtful that he would independently arrive at the conclusion that a carpenter died for his sins 2,000 years ago.  Such a belief is clearly an example of a child’s upbringing and personal choices.

I believe it’s time for the religious right to literally practice what they preach.  If you believe that people should not be given legal protection for behaviors and beliefs that are a matter of environment and personal choice, then you should immediately start lobbying for an amendment to end the rights and protection provided to religion in our society.

Doing so will demonstrate that you are firm in your beliefs and reject hypocrisy.  Only after you have done this can we begin to have a fair dialogue about the “special rights” being given to homosexuals.

To put it quite plainly… It’s time for you walk the walk instead of just talking the talk.

Or will the rejection of hypocrisy cause the very foundation of your beliefs to crumble to dust?

Neil deGrasse Tyson is coming to Philly!!!

I suppose “normal” people get excited by getting the chance to meet their favorite bands, athletes, or actors.

If, on the other hand,  you’re a nerdy atheist in his mid thirties, you squeal like a little girl when you find out that astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will appearing at the Free Library of Philadelphia.

For those of you who don’t know who Neil deGrasse Tyson is (and were too lazy to click the above link)…

Tyson is the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the host of Nova Science Now! on PBS, and an author.  In short, he has devoted his professional life to promoting scientific literacy among the general population.

The state of science education in our society has been quite bleak for some time now.  The United States consistently trails behind other industrialized nations in terms of scientific literacy.  This lack of knowledge among the general population has created a vacuum which is eagerly filled by pseudo-scientific frauds like Ken Ham, Kent Hovind, and Jenny McCarthy.  Their proliferation of bad science continues to compound the level of ignorance of the American people.

This is why men like Neil Tyson are so vitally important in today’s world.  Tyson is a brilliant individual with a wide range of knowledge on all things scientific.  Not only does he possess this knowledge, but he has an amazing ability to relay this information in a manner that is informal, friendly, and fun… an ability which is sadly lacking among most great scientific minds.

Obvious parallels have been drawn between Tyson and the late Carl Sagan.  Although I’ve always had a great personal affinity for Sagan’s work, I feel that Tyson has a greater ability to convey knowledge in a format which is accessible to everyone.  I could spend hours listening to Sagan’s slow, methodical, philosophical meanderings… but I can certainly see how he could lull many people to sleep.  Tyson is more of a scientist of the people.  It’s easy to imagine sitting in a bar with him while he explains the Big Bang Theory using salt shakers, a beer mug, and napkins as props.

Tyson’s “Death By Black Hole” is one of my favorite books.  It is an anthology of his articles compiled in a format that provides a great deal of information about astrophysics, and it requires little to no previous knowledge of the subject to pick up, understand, and enjoy.  It is an excellent primer for anyone who wants to learn a bit about our universe, and it’s still an enjoyable read for people that already have some knowledge of the material.

I encourage everyone to check out Nail deGrasse Tyson’s work, and head out to the Central Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia on Tuesday, March 3rd to hear him speak.  I assure you that you won’t be sorry!

Naughty, nice, or petty and anal-retentive?

I must say that I’m feeling pretty positive this holiday season.  I’ve been hearing a lot of wonderful feedback about the PhillyCOR holiday display from theists and non-theists alike.  It’s absolutely wonderful to see all sorts of different people putting aside their differences and embracing ideas like joy, love, and peace.  Surely, no one could be petty enough to make the holiday season petty and divisive, could they?

Rest assured, friends… Whenever there is a niche that can be filled with petty and divisive nonsense, the American Family Association will gladly be there to do just that!

I submit to you the AFA’s “Naughty or Nice?” list.  It is a guide intended to inform their members where to shop this holiday season.

And what exactly is the criteria they use to make this list?

AFA reviewed up to four areas to determine if a company was “Christmas-friendly” in their advertising: print media (newspaper inserts), broadcast media (radio/television), website and/or personal visits to the store. If a company’s ad has references to items associated with Christmas (trees, wreaths, lights, etc.), it was considered as an attempt to reach “Christmas” shoppers.

If a company uses the term “Christmas” on a regular basis, we consider that company Christmas-friendly.

A company may be removed from the “bad” list by providing documentation to AFA.

That’s right, folks… nothing says “peace on Earth and good will toward men” like spending countless hours combing through a company’s advertisements and establishing a ratio of how many times they use the word “Christmas” as opposed to “holiday”.

I would like to pose an open question to the brain trust at the AFA… “Are you serious?”

I would like to add a follow-up question, if I may… “No… really… are you serious?”

And if I may ask one final question… “No… come on.  Stop screwing with me here.  Ha ha ha… I get the joke.  Fun time’s over.  Please… give me an honest answer… Are you SERIOUS?

If you answered these three questions “Yes, yes, and yes”, then may I suggest giving yourself the gift of psychotherapy this holiday season.

I hope you can find a psychiatrist that uses the word “Christmas”.

The things we can learn from Jack Chick

I am honestly starting to question the sincerity of Jack Chick, creator of the infamous “Gospel Tracts”.

I used to take him at face value, assuming that he was a misguided fundamentalist who used his moronic creations to brainwash America’s youth.

Recently, however, his tracts have become so utterly absurd that I can only assume he is a brilliant atheist satirist.  Seriously… his work is a far greater mockery of Christian thought than any freethinking humorist could ever conjure up.

A brief glimpse of two pages of his most recent tract “Who Is He?” will make this point abundantly clear.

We’ll begin with page one, which is a realistic depiction of how various cultural groups view Jesus…

Ah, what a rogues’ gallery Jack has assembled for our reading pleasure!

In the center of the panel, we have a psychotically evil (and apparently sub-human) Arabic gentleman shouting about Jesus being a Muslim.  Next to him, we have a generic bow-tie clad black man (who I am sure only coincidentally resembles a prominent  African American religious leader) who has the audacity to suggest that Jesus was a PERSON OF COLOR that expressed revolutionary ideas.  In the bottom right corner, we have an individual who may or may not be a buck-toothed Asian claiming that Jesus was the cousin of Buddha (who lived a few centuries before Jesus).  I also have reason to believe this gentleman may be an elitist, as he is holding a martini in his hand.

Which brings us to the star of the page… a shadowy, hook-nosed figure who informs us that everybody HATED Jesus.  I will make no guesses as to what ethnic group this individual is supposed to represent, but I will point out that he bears a striking resemblance to many of the shadowy, hook-nosed characters who called for the death of Jesus in some of Jack’s other tracts.

Now we can get into the most amazing page of this tract.  Actually, I will go so far as to say that this is the MOST AMAZING PAGE EVER PUBLISHED IN THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY.

How can I make such a bold declaration?  Well, what else can you say about one tiny page that explains ALL THE SCIENCE IN THE UNIVERSE?!

There you have it, folks!  The first panel explains everything there is to know about cosmology and biology, while panel two explains all the laws of physics.  It’s so simple that a drunken chimpanzee (who is in no way related to humans) could have dreamed it up… SO IT MUST BE TRUE!!!

Thank you, Jack Chick.  Thank you for providing countless hours of entertainment to sane and rational people.  Thank you for making it so damn easy to illustrate the utterly moronic absurdities of fundamentalist thought.

Keep ‘em coming, Jack!  But please…

Keep this crap away from children.

Philadelphia is oppressing Christians!!!

It seems that I should feel a great sense of shame for living in the city of Philadelphia.  Our once great city has apparently “trampled free speech”.   That’s right, folks… the birthplace of our nation is allegedly attempting to silence that tiny, oppressed minority known as “Christians”.

At least, we would be led to believe this by a recent One News Now article entitled Freedom of speech trampled in Philly”.

The subject of this article is Michael Marcavage, the leader of a local right wing Christian group called Repent America.  This organization has become a fixture at almost every gay rights event in the Philadelphia area.  They seem to be under the impression that they are making a statement with their presence, but they essentially do little more than provide a humorous sideshow for the revelers to enjoy.

Mr. Marcavage got himself into a bit of trouble with the federal park rangers in the historic area known as Independence Mall.  He was simply minding his own business, wandering the sidewalk outside the Liberty Bell Pavilion cramming his religious beliefs down the throats of city residents and tourists.  Upon seeing this, the rangers instructed him that this sort of activity was not permitted on the sidewalk outside of national monuments, at which point they pointed out that there is an officially designated free speech area where such demonstrations are permitted.

Our stalwart hero would have none of this, though.  After all… he was being unfairly targeted as a Christian!  After refusing to comply with the rangers’ request, he was charged with obstructing agency operations.  He was later convicted and punished with a one year probation and fine.

The following excerpt is taken from the original article…

“We weren’t obstructing anyone. In fact, the government even stipulated, during the trial, that we were not obstructing or blocking anyone and that I was not acting disorderly. So there’s no reasonable explanation other than the fact that they wanted us to go to this ‘free-speech zone,’” Marcavage explains.

That zone is an area away from pedestrian traffic, apparently designed to keep protesters and others with a message from communicating with the general public.

I suppose even those of us who do not agree with the political or religious views of Marcavage should be sympathetic to his plight.  After all… they attempted to silence him by confining him to “an area away from pedestrian traffic, apparently designed to keep protesters and others with a message from communicating with the general public” because he was preaching the gospel of Christ.  This hardly seems fair, does it?

Marcavage and the spin doctors at One News Now have painted a completely inaccurate picture of exactly what the “Free Speech Area” at Independence Mall is and what purpose it serves.  I know you may find this shocking, but conservative Christians often engage in distortions of the truth and outright lies!  (GASP!!!)

I walk by this area twice a day.  It is located on the 500 block of Market Street, a block which sees some of the heaviest pedestrian traffic in the entire city.  It is a very large paved area which is adorned with a stone monument engraved with the First Amendment.  In addition, it is located smack dab in the middle of the Independence Mall area, which means it is highly visible in the center of the large grassy field which runs from Independence Hall to the National Constitution Center.  People demonstrating in this zone are in clear view of visitors to both of these sites, as well as any tourists at Liberty Bell Pavilion.

Oh, I almost forgot… IT IS DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE PHILADELPHIA VISITORS’ CENTER, as well as the area where many of the tour buses load and unload.  While we are on the subject of tours, I should add that many of the tour guides BRING THEIR TOURS TO THE FREE SPEECH AREA.

So many of you may be confused at this point.  The area is prominently located in a highly visible historic area, and people actually bring an audience to you.  It sounds like a demonstrator’s dream location, doesn’t it?  You couldn’t ask for a more prime piece of real estate to take your message to the masses!

If this area doesn’t exist to “keep protesters and others with a message from communicating with the general public”, then what purpose does it serve?

Independence Mall is an area which covers several city blocks.  It is not self-contained.  City streets run directly through it.  In addition to the thousands of tourists visiting it each day, there are thousands more city residents passing through while conducting their daily routine.  It is very difficult for a handful of park rangers to patrol this area and maintain public safety.

That is why the Free Speech area exists.  It was a common sense solution to balance the safety of the residents and visitors with the right to peaceably assemble and protest.  Protests can quickly get out of hand when groups with conflicting opinions come face to face.  By giving protesters a prominent area in which to legally conduct their activities, the park rangers can more easily diffuse any potentially violent and dangerous situations.  This is an arrangement that most of us that are politically active in the city of Philadelphia have accepted as a rational compromise.

Michael Marcavage would have us believe that he is a martyr who is being oppressed for his religious views.  Religious groups throughout the country are more than willing to indulge this illusion by holding him up as an example of a victim of an evil society which seeks to destroy him.

Michael Marcavage is not a hero.  He is not a martyr.  He is not an oppressed Christian being thrown to the lions.  Most of us in Philly are all too aware of what he actually is… a media whore.

Fred Phelps would be so proud!
