Middle school students receive “letter from hell”

I am not even going to attempt to be nice about this. It is utterly sickening.
A teacher, entrusted with the education of middle school students, decided to show a video containing fundamentalist Christian propaganda in health class. Essentially, the video informed the children that they were plummeting toward eternal torment unless they devoted their lives to Jesus Christ.
It is teachers like this that undermine the integrity of our public schools. Why are American students so far behind children in other developed nations in understanding of math and science? The blame lands firmly in the lap of teachers like this.
The fact that this teacher received only a short suspension is a joke. If you want to push this drivel on children, you should be teaching in a parochial school. This teacher knew this, yet showed the video anyway. For this, their career in public schools should now be over.
For those of you that are going to try to pull a First Amendment argument on this one… don’t even bother. This is not a First Amendment issue. There are proper places for such rhetoric, and our public schools are not among them.

Can we all just share the holiday?

I just want to make a few comments concerning this video.
First of all, I am growing increasingly tired of people making uniformed comments about groups of people trying to “steal Christmas” from Christians. Anyone who bothers to actually research the history of the holiday will quickly discover that CHRISTIANS STOLE THE HOLIDAY IN THE FIRST PLACE. I am not trying to imply that they have no right to celebrate it as they see fit. I firmly believe that everyone has the right to celebrate their culture’s holidays. In fact, I enjoy the fact that the tapestry of society is woven with threads of diversity. I simply wish that people would take the time to become informed on topics before making such ignorant statements. If we really want to get technical, we could bemoan Christians for not practicing a drunken orgy which lasts for days, which was the TRADITIONAL way to celebrate the holiday in Roman society.
My second point is this… Is it really such a horrible thing to share your holiday with others? What has come to be known as the “Christmas Season” carries a great deal of cultural significance beyond the Christian community. If you claim that this season is a time to embrace “peace on Earth and goodwill toward men”, then shouldn’t you embrace the idea that others want to share these virtues with you? Perhaps I’m missing something here, but isn’t it far more important to embrace the spirit of what Jesus taught than merely exalt his birth?
No matter what religion or philosophy we embrace, there are certain ideas we all hold dear. We all feel love. We understand the importance of being together with family and friends. We all feel a sense of reverence and gratitude for the people we hold dear. We all want to live in a better world in which we can move beyond the petty things which divide us.
I ask this not only of Christians, but of everyone… Can’t we just open our hearts a little bit and share our love and joy with one another? Can’t we just put aside our differences, if only for this season, and celebrate life together without accusing one another of stealing a holiday?
If you can’t find it in your heart to answer “yes” to these questions, then perhaps you need to examine your beliefs and ask yourself if you truly have goodness and virtue in your heart.
So to all of those who are willing to embrace these ideas, I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanza, Happy Yule, a Blessed Winter Solstice, Happy Generic Winter Holiday, and whatever else you want to tack on to the list.

Violent oppression of women in Islam

I devote most of my blog to fighting injustices committed by religious fundamentalists within the United States. Although I obviously despise the bigotry practiced by many conservative American Christian groups, I am a realist. The activities of these groups pale in comparison to the atrocities being committed by Islamic extremists throughout the world.
I am posting this video because I feel that it is vital to raise awareness of the violence and oppression against women being committed throughout the world.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation

Many of us in the secularist community are already quite aware of the growing evangelical movement within the United States military. There have been several documented cases of military chaplains using their positions to attempt to convert personnel of other faiths to their fundamentalist Christian views.
It is rather upsetting that the very institutions that have been established to protect our way of life are becoming a breeding ground for religious intolerance.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation is an organization working to protect the rights of the men and women in our nation’s military.
They have recently produced this short film entitled “With God on Our Side”. Please take a few minutes to watch it for a better understanding of the problems faced by many of these individuals.

Are creationists smarter than a 14 year old?

As you may remember, I had a bit of a run in with the popular Youtube creationist VenomFangX a while back (The post can be found here).
I must admit that I felt somewhat guilty for doing this, as it was, as they say, a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent. Any reasonably intelligent 35 year old man should be able to refute that guy’s nonsense.
As it turns out, A FOURTEEN YEAR OLD BOY can refute said nonsense just as easily!
So, my friends… sit back, relax, and enjoy watching one of our world’s future scientists rip apart some creationist claptrap!
