Exploring the fundamental flaws of fundamentalist thought

On a personal note…
Jun 25th
Although this is completely off topic, I have to take the time to convey a personal message.
I would like to congratulate my intelligent and lovely niece, Tori. After apparently going behind my back and growing up at some point, she will be graduating high school this Friday and will soon be heading off to New York City to begin her college life!
It seems that my sister must have done SOMETHING right after all. Perhaps miracles do exist!
(Disclaimer: My sister is a wonderful mother. As her little brother, I’m legally obligated to give her a hard time!)
Happy Earth Day, fellow Earthians!
Apr 22nd
I hope everybody takes a little bit of time today to learn a little bit about our amazing Mother Earth.
She’s about 4,000,000,000 years old, though some say she doesn’t look a day over 6,000.
If we don’t learn to treat her with a little more respect, she’s going to boot our asses off of her. We really don’t want this to happen, because we have nowhere else to go right now.
Say what you will about our Earth, but I can honestly say one thing…
It is the absolute best planet I’ve ever lived on!!!

Sunday Out!
May 7th
We just arrived home from the Sunday Out block party. We had a great a time! It was a most positive experience.
I will be posting a more in-depth article in the near future.
The Fundamentalist Agenda
May 3rd
I just stumbled across a wonderful article from UU World magazine by Davidson Loehr. It’s a couple years old, but it’s still great. It examines the concept of fear in religious thought.
Finally, “The Truth About Homosexuality”!

How does one even respond this? How do you even debate with individuals this removed from reality?
This is a clear example of people living wrapped in a subjective reality. I suppose it’s rather comfortable there… you just need to close your eyes, click your heels, and magically drift away to the mystical realm of self-righteousness. It’s a happy little place full of big fluffy clouds, Norman Rockwellian scenes, and everyone shares the same warped view God… and the birds have only right wings. You know… the way Jesus wants it.
Back here on Earth, I stand puzzled with a thought. Why, oh why, is God always so damn concerned with what consenting couples do with their genitals? There is so much pain, suffering, violence, hatred, and injustice in the world. Perhaps he (or she) should be just a tad bit more concerned with these issues.
Hey… wait a minute… what if these people are wrong?
Is it possible that we are not born inherently evil? Is it possible that we are not all trapped in the middle of some great cosmic tug-o-war between a benevolent God and a fallen angel? Is it actually possible that we are not being tested by God, or tricked by the devil?
Maybe, just maybe, the best we can do is just live our lives as we see fit, treating all people with dignity and respect… trying each day to be kind to one another, and actually spread a little bit of love through our world?
Nah… keep forgetting… some snake tricked some chick into tricking some dude into eating an apple six thousand years ago, so we’re all miserable wretches sitting in judgement. Makes a whole lot more sense, doesn’t it?
The DaVinci Code debaucle
Apr 17th
I am astounded by the degree of wrath being incurred by the upcoming release of the film version of “The DaVinci Code”. All over the internet, Christian groups seem obsessed with proving the the facts being presented in this story are false. Here’s a fact they seem to be ignoring…
It is a work of fiction.
However… if I may indulge in speculation for a moment… what exactly is so horrifying about the idea of Jesus being married? Does this concept invalidate any of his teachings? Perhaps the idea invokes an image of Jesus actually being human, an idea considered most distressing to many Christians.
Since the dawn of Christianity, the divinity of Jesus has been debated time and again. It seems somewhat pointless to me, personally. If you live your life by an idealogy you hold sacred, does the divinity of the messenger of that idealogy change the validity of the message?
I would suggest to those who answer “yes” to this question that it may be time to examine why you hold these ideas to be sacred. There are many of us who live our lives with such idealogies who do not feel the need to deify those who introduced them. I have a great deal of reverence for many spiritual individuals throughout history, including Jesus. I do, however, recognize these individuals to be human. I see them as flawed in many ways… like each of us.
Perhaps we should always view them in this way, for in this view we can find hope… hope that each of us can aspire to such a life, and bring our own light into the world.
Happy Secular Spring Holiday
Apr 16th
Just kidding… I want to wish all of our Christian friends a happy and joyous Easter.
Throughout the centuries, people all over the world have viewed this time of year as a celebration of life and fertility. Even if you don’t celebrate the Christian Easter, you can always see today as such a celebration. There’s no reason we can’t all share a holiday and accept that it means something different to each of us.
So… no matter what we believe, let’s all put aside our differences and celebrate the beauty of our world and life itself.
